Quantum computing poses a fundamental threat to current encryption methods by rendering certain cryptographic algorithms vulnerable to rapid decryption. This is because quantum machines can efficiently solve complex mathematical problems underpinning widely used public-key cryptography.

Emerging Threat Landscape

Fault-tolerant quantum computing, though still nascent, is advancing. IBM's recent milestone connecting its first modular cryogenic systems marks significant progress towards this capability. Analysts expect fully realized quantum computers will likely compromise algorithms like RSA and ECC, critical for secure communications and data, despite the technology's current influence score of 1/100.

Countermeasures and Preparedness

To mitigate this future risk, a global shift towards post-quantum cryptography (PQC) is underway. The United States, a top signal contributor with 11 tracked signals related to quantum, is actively investing in and standardizing new cryptographic algorithms. These quantum-resistant solutions are designed to protect sensitive information, including that relevant to nuclear weapons, from future quantum attacks.
