Analysts expect fully realized quantum computers will likely compromise algorithms like RSA and ECC, critical for secure communications and data, despite the technology's current influence score of 1/100.

Countermeasures and Preparedness

To mitigate this future risk, a global shift towards post-quantum cryptography (PQC) is underway. The United States, a top signal contributor with 11 tracked signals related to quantum, is actively investing in and standardizing new cryptographic algorithms. These quantum-resistant solutions are designed to protect sensitive information, including that relevant to nuclear weapons, from future quantum attacks.
