Why Volodymyr Zelensky Ran for President
Campaign Strategy
Zelensky campaigned on resolving the Donbas war through dialogue with Russia and eliminating oligarchic influence in Ukrainian politics. His outsider status appealed to voters fatigued by traditional politicians and the ongoing conflict that had claimed thousands of lives since 2014.
Wartime Leadership
Since taking office, Zelensky has transformed into a wartime leader following Russia's full scale invasion in 2022. Recent statements show his current focus: he has condemned Russian strikes on civilian infrastructure, including attacks on boats carrying corn in the Black Sea, and thanked Territorial Defense Forces soldiers for defending Ukraine since the war's opening days.
