Importance stratégique
The strait remains one of the world's most heavily monitored waterways. Taiwan and China together account for 130 of 100 tracked geopolitical signals in the region, reflecting sustained tension over this critical passage. Recent counterintelligence operations underscore the intensity of competition, including the FBI arrest of a woman accused of spying on Taiwan's leadership for China.
Dynamiques actuelles
The narrow passage continues to serve as a flashpoint for great power competition. United States involvement remains limited in tracked signal volume at 3 signals, yet American security commitments to Taiwan make the strait a de facto theater of strategic contestation between Washington and Beijing. The waterway handles roughly one third of global maritime trade.
