Origin and Spread
The comparison began circulating online after Xi assumed the presidency in 2013. Chinese internet users noted similarities in appearance and posture, and the nickname spread across social media platforms and forums, particularly outside mainland China where censorship is less restrictive. The name became a coded way for critics to reference the leader indirectly.
Current Context
As of 2026, with Xi Jinping maintaining his position as President and CCP General Secretary, the nickname persists in international discourse despite strict content controls within China. Recent diplomatic activity, including what GeoGazet tracking describes as "unusual rest breaks for Xi Jinping" during summits with foreign leaders, continues to generate international commentary. The term remains primarily used outside official channels and mainland Chinese platforms.
